Moss holds water against the tiles, breaks off in lumps that block gutters and outlets, and in a hard frost the water it holds expands inside the tile surface. We clear moss from roofs across Boston and the fen villages, and clear the gutters at the same time, because most of it ends up in them.
Scraped by hand, not blasted
A pressure lance strips moss quickly and takes the sealed surface of the tiles with it. On a concrete tile that surface is the weatherproofing, so blasting it turns a slow problem into a fast one. We remove moss by hand with scrapers and brushes, working down the roof, and we will turn down jet-washing a roof that should not be jet-washed even when we are asked for it.
What shows up once it is off
Moss is very good at hiding cracked and slipped tiles, failed ridge pointing and lead that has lifted. Clearing it is also a survey: you get photographs of the roof as it actually is, and a plain list of anything that wants attention, with no obligation to have any of it done by us.
Damp air and shallow pitches
The fen holds damp, and damp is what moss wants. North-facing slopes, roofs shaded by trees in the older parts of town, and the shallower pitches on newer estate housing all stay wet longer. There is nothing wrong with those roofs; they simply need clearing more often than a steep sunny slope.

Treatments, and what we will not promise
There are biocide treatments that slow regrowth and we will talk them through honestly, including the option of doing nothing at all. What we will not do is promise that any treatment keeps a shaded fen roof clear for good, because nothing does. Clearing the roof every few years is cheaper and more honest than a guarantee nobody can keep.

One of the problems of finding a roofer when you are an older person is the thought of being scammed, especially given the increasing numbers of rogue traders together with the high costs at stake especially if the work is poor or non existent. We trawled a lot of roofers and found varying prices and limited experience and ‘one man bands’ offering little or no guarantees for their work. We came across Fred’s newly formed EverCrest Property Care Ltd Company and were initially concerned at the limited 3 months or so that they had been trading for, albeit that Fred had been a Sole Trader for some 6 years. So we undertook a ‘due diligence’ on the company and found they had worked on a limited number of roofing projects in the start up time. However having had a number of positive conversations with Fred we decided to give his company a chance having had a very good response and price to our required specification that formed the basis of our Building Control Application through Boston Borough Council. They say you can only make a first impression once and EverCrest Property Care Ltd certainly made an excellent impression indeed, in fact the work they undertook was first class and our Building Control Inspector was equally impressed with the standard of works they carried out. Our project involved replacing a main roof on a detached property and likewise on a kitchen extension. Work commenced on a Friday with the scaffolding being erected along with the delivery of two skips. On the Monday morning around 8:30am a team of 7 arrived on site and by 10am both roofs had been stripped and the Building Inspector was called early to check out the structure prior to the roofers installing the new insulation, membrane and battening in readiness for the new soffits, guttering and tiles being installed from Tuesday onwards. By Thursday the project had been completed and the Building Inspector returned first thing Friday morning and signed off the work having been impressed with the finished work. On the basis of the above experience we would have no hesitation in recommending EverCrest Property Care Ltd as a suitable and very experienced roofing contractor and would be happy to give any references to their standard of works.

Will pressure washing wreck my tiles?
On concrete tiles it can, because the sealed surface is what keeps the water out and a lance strips it away. That is why we do it by hand, and why we will decline the job rather than damage a sound roof.
Does moss really cause leaks?
Indirectly and reliably. It holds water against the tiles, it breaks off and blocks gutters and outlets, and a blocked gutter puts water where it should not be. It also hides cracked tiles very effectively.
How often does a roof round here need doing?
Every few years on a shaded or north-facing slope, less often on an open sunny one. We will tell you what your roof looks like it needs rather than sell you a schedule.
Do you clear the gutters as part of it?
Yes, gutters, downpipes and outlets, and we check they run. There is little sense clearing a roof and leaving the moss sitting in the gutter.
