Dry ridge and dry verge systems in Boston

If there is one job that suits Boston roofs particularly well, it is this one. Mortar-bedded ridges and verges fail faster on exposed ground, and there is very little shelter anywhere between here and the coast. A dry system fixes the tiles down mechanically and takes mortar out of the equation for good.
The cycle worth breaking
Mortar is rigid, a roof moves, and the bed cracks because it cannot follow. Water gets into the crack, frost expands it, and pieces begin to let go. Then a gale off the wash finds whatever is loose. Rebedding restores the roof to exactly the state it was in before it failed, which is why so many houses here have had it done twice.
What gets fitted
A ridge kit runs a ventilated roll along the apex with each ridge tile screwed down to a batten through a clamp. A dry verge is a set of interlocking caps down the gable edge, again mechanically fixed. Both are ventilated, and ventilation matters more than people expect: a roof needs air moving through it, and a solid mortar bed is very effective at preventing that.
Gable ends take the worst of it
On an exposed fen gable the verge is the first thing the wind gets under. Once one verge tile lifts, the wind has an edge to work at and the rest follow along the run. A dry verge removes that edge entirely, which is worth more here than in a sheltered town.

One of the problems of finding a roofer when you are an older person is the thought of being scammed, especially given the increasing numbers of rogue traders together with the high costs at stake especially if the work is poor or non existent. We trawled a lot of roofers and found varying prices and limited experience and ‘one man bands’ offering little or no guarantees for their work. We came across Fred’s newly formed EverCrest Property Care Ltd Company and were initially concerned at the limited 3 months or so that they had been trading for, albeit that Fred had been a Sole Trader for some 6 years. So we undertook a ‘due diligence’ on the company and found they had worked on a limited number of roofing projects in the start up time. However having had a number of positive conversations with Fred we decided to give his company a chance having had a very good response and price to our required specification that formed the basis of our Building Control Application through Boston Borough Council. They say you can only make a first impression once and EverCrest Property Care Ltd certainly made an excellent impression indeed, in fact the work they undertook was first class and our Building Control Inspector was equally impressed with the standard of works they carried out. Our project involved replacing a main roof on a detached property and likewise on a kitchen extension. Work commenced on a Friday with the scaffolding being erected along with the delivery of two skips. On the Monday morning around 8:30am a team of 7 arrived on site and by 10am both roofs had been stripped and the Building Inspector was called early to check out the structure prior to the roofers installing the new insulation, membrane and battening in readiness for the new soffits, guttering and tiles being installed from Tuesday onwards. By Thursday the project had been completed and the Building Inspector returned first thing Friday morning and signed off the work having been impressed with the finished work. On the basis of the above experience we would have no hesitation in recommending EverCrest Property Care Ltd as a suitable and very experienced roofing contractor and would be happy to give any references to their standard of works.

My ridge was rebedded a few years ago and it has gone again. Why?
Because rebedding puts back the thing that failed. On exposed ground the crack, freeze and lift cycle simply starts over. A mechanically fixed ridge has nothing in it to crack or wash out.
Does it look different?
The ridge barely changes, because the same tiles sit in the same place. A dry verge alters the gable edge a little, and we will show you what it looks like before you commit to it.
Can it be fitted without re-roofing?
Yes, and often it should be. If the covering has years left in it there is no sense replacing it to fix the ridge.
Is it worth doing the verges as well as the ridge?
On an exposed gable, usually yes. The verge is where wind gets its first grip, and doing the ridge alone leaves the edge that fails first untouched.
