Garage roof in Redland 49 tile and a torch-on felt summer house roof

A timber garage near Holbeach stripped and re-roofed in Redland 49 concrete tile, and the summer house flat roof alongside it re-decked and finished in torch-on felt.

  • Gedney Drove End, Holbeach

What we did

How the job went

Outbuildings tend to be left until they leak onto something expensive. Here the garage and the summer house were both done in one visit, which is the sensible way round when the same access and the same crew cover the pair of them.

The garage

The garage was carrying an old mineral sheet covering that had gone green and porous. It came off and the roof was rebuilt properly: a Proctor Air breathable membrane, treated battens, and Redland 49 concrete tile, the same covering used on full house roofs. The verges and eaves were detailed and new guttering and an outlet went on at the same time. A timber garage with a tiled roof stops looking like a shed with a lid on it.

The summer house flat roof

The summer house had a flat roof, so the deck was replaced in new OSB boarding and the covering built up in torch-on felt. Torch-on goes down in layers, bonded to the deck and to each other with a gas torch, and it is finished with a mineral surfaced cap sheet. The grey finish in the photographs is that cap sheet, and the black in the earlier frames is the layer underneath it going down.

The photographs start with both roofs finished and run back through the work to the garage as it was.
