Before you ask
Questions people ask
Why is only one side of our Crowland roof mossy?
The exposed side dries out in the wind, while the sheltered side stays damp long enough for moss to settle. It is very common out here, and it is usually the north-facing slope.
Will cleaning damage old clay pantiles?
Not if the method suits the roof, which is why we look first. We photograph the roof before anyone touches it and clean it in a way that old clay can take.
Will clearing the moss help our gutters?
Yes. The clumps the wind tears off a mossy roof end up in the gutter, so clearing the roof and the gutters together deals with both at once.
What exactly will happen on the day?
You will know before you agree to anything. At the quote visit we go through the process step by step, so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.

More about roof cleaning & moss removal in Crowland
Crowland's wind keeps the exposed slope of a roof fairly clean. It is the other side that grows the moss: the north-facing pitch, the slope in the lee of the house next door, the corner shaded by a tree. Damp lingers on those slopes, especially on still autumn mornings when mist lies over the fen, and moss takes hold.
Why moss is worth clearing
Moss works like a sponge. It holds water against the tiles, and when that water freezes it opens hairline cracks and lifts tile edges. Then a gale tears clumps loose and drops them in the gutter, where they block the outlet and send rainwater over the front. Out here a mossy slope and a blocked gutter usually turn up together.
The process, step by step
We explain how we work at the quote, step by step, as we have for other customers who wanted to know exactly what would happen on their roof. In outline:
- We photograph the roof as it is, so its condition is on record before anyone touches it
- The moss is cleared from the tiles
- The roof is cleaned down in a way the covering can take
- The gutters are cleared of everything that comes off the roof
- Any broken or slipped tiles we uncover are photographed and shown to you
Gentle with old pantile
Some of the older roofs near the abbey are clay pantile that has weathered for generations, and old clay does not want a pressure washer on full power. We judge what each roof will take before we start. If we find damage under the moss, you see it in the photographs and get the price for any repair in writing before deciding. The quote is free, and the price quoted is the price paid. Ring 01733 855167.
