Roofing

Dry Ridge & Dry Verge

Mortar-free ridge and verge systems.

Traditional ridge and verge mortar has one flaw: it is mortar. It cracks with the roof's movement, dries out in the sun and washes out in the rain, and every few winters somebody has to go back up and do it again. A dry ridge or dry verge system replaces the mortar with mechanical fixings, screws, clamps and clips, so there is nothing up there to crack and wash out.

What our dry-fix service includes

Dry ridge systems

The ridge tiles along the top of the roof are fixed down mechanically to a continuous roll, which holds them fast in wind and lets the roof breathe. No mortar bed, so no mortar failure.

Dry verge systems

The verge is the roof edge above your gable wall. Dry verge units cap and clip each tile end, closing the edge against wind, rain and nesting birds without a bed of mortar to fall away on to the drive.

How we quote and fit it

  1. Ring or fill in the form, and expect a call back rather than silence.
  2. We check the ridge and verges up close, with photographs, so you can see the state of the existing mortar for yourself.
  3. We walk you through the system and what it will and will not solve. When one customer asked us about their failing ridge line, we fitted a full dry ridge and dry verge system and explained the benefits properly before any work was agreed.
  4. You receive a fixed written price, the same figure you will eventually pay.
  5. Fitting is booked in, with fair warning of any access equipment arriving.

The systems we fit

We use dry-fix systems as standard on our own full re-roofs, fixing ridge and hips mechanically rather than bedding them, and we retrofit the same approach to existing roofs whose mortar has had its day. Once fitted, the wind can pull at a mechanically fixed ridge all it likes.

What people say

In their words, not ours

One of the problems of finding a roofer when you are an older person is the thought of being scammed, especially given the increasing numbers of rogue traders together with the high costs at stake especially if the work is poor or non existent. We trawled a lot of roofers and found varying prices and limited experience and ‘one man bands’ offering little or no guarantees for their work. We came across Fred’s newly formed EverCrest Property Care Ltd Company and were initially concerned at the limited 3 months or so that they had been trading for, albeit that Fred had been a Sole Trader for some 6 years. So we undertook a ‘due diligence’ on the company and found they had worked on a limited number of roofing projects in the start up time. However having had a number of positive conversations with Fred we decided to give his company a chance having had a very good response and price to our required specification that formed the basis of our Building Control Application through Boston Borough Council. They say you can only make a first impression once and EverCrest Property Care Ltd certainly made an excellent impression indeed, in fact the work they undertook was first class and our Building Control Inspector was equally impressed with the standard of works they carried out. Our project involved replacing a main roof on a detached property and likewise on a kitchen extension. Work commenced on a Friday with the scaffolding being erected along with the delivery of two skips. On the Monday morning around 8:30am a team of 7 arrived on site and by 10am both roofs had been stripped and the Building Inspector was called early to check out the structure prior to the roofers installing the new insulation, membrane and battening in readiness for the new soffits, guttering and tiles being installed from Tuesday onwards. By Thursday the project had been completed and the Building Inspector returned first thing Friday morning and signed off the work having been impressed with the finished work. On the basis of the above experience we would have no hesitation in recommending EverCrest Property Care Ltd as a suitable and very experienced roofing contractor and would be happy to give any references to their standard of works.

Questions we get asked about dry ridge & dry verge

What is a dry verge, in plain terms?

It is a row of interlocking caps fixed along the edge of the roof above the gable wall, doing the job mortar used to do but held on with fixings instead. Nothing to crack, nothing to drop into the garden.

How much does a dry ridge system cost?

It varies with the length of ridge and hip and the access needed, so we look at the roof first, free, and then commit to a figure in writing. What we commit to is what you pay.

Can dry verge be installed on my existing roof?

In most cases yes. Dry verge installation is a common retrofit on roofs whose edge mortar keeps failing. We will confirm it suits your tiles when we inspect.

Is dry ridge better than repointing the ridge?

Repointing buys time; a dry ridge removes the failure point altogether, because there is no mortar left to weather. We will tell you honestly whether your ridge needs either.

Will a dry-fix system stop bits of mortar falling off my roof?

Yes, that is much of the point. The old bedding is replaced with mechanical fixings, so there is no loose mortar left to break away in frost or wind.
