Dry ridge and dry verge in Sleaford

Mechanically fixed ridge and verge systems with no mortar to crack and wash out. Free written quotes.

  • Sleaford, Lincolnshire

Look along any older roof line after a hard winter and you will often see the same story: ridge mortar cracked, chunks missing, grey crumbs in the gutter. Mortar on a ridge or verge is always working loose, because the roof moves and the mortar does not. A dry system ends that cycle for good.

How a dry system works

Dry ridge and dry verge hold the tiles on mechanically, with screws, clamps and caps, instead of bedding them in mortar. There is nothing up there to crack, nothing for frost to get into and nothing to wash out in a downpour, so the fixings keep doing their job in weather that would be chewing through a mortar bed. Once fitted, it does not need re-bedding every few years the way mortar does.

Why it suits roofs around Sleaford

Sleaford stands in open fen country on the River Slea, and the wind that crosses that flat ground works ridge lines hard. Wind rocks mortar-bedded ridge tiles by fractions of a millimetre, thousands of times a storm, and eventually the bed lets go. A mechanically fixed ridge has no bed to let go of. On exposed slopes at the edge of town and on older Sleaford roofs alike, that is exactly the weakness worth removing.

Fitted the way we fit our own

Dry-fix ridge and hips are what we put on our own photographed re-roof project, so we are recommending a system we choose when the roof is ours to build. When one customer asked us to install a dry ridge and dry verge system, we walked them through the benefits before they committed rather than after. You get the same treatment in Sleaford: a free visit, photographs of your existing ridge and verge, a plain explanation, and a price in writing that does not move. The finished work is guaranteed for five or ten years depending on the work.

What people say

In their words, not ours

One of the problems of finding a roofer when you are an older person is the thought of being scammed, especially given the increasing numbers of rogue traders together with the high costs at stake especially if the work is poor or non existent. We trawled a lot of roofers and found varying prices and limited experience and ‘one man bands’ offering little or no guarantees for their work. We came across Fred’s newly formed EverCrest Property Care Ltd Company and were initially concerned at the limited 3 months or so that they had been trading for, albeit that Fred had been a Sole Trader for some 6 years. So we undertook a ‘due diligence’ on the company and found they had worked on a limited number of roofing projects in the start up time. However having had a number of positive conversations with Fred we decided to give his company a chance having had a very good response and price to our required specification that formed the basis of our Building Control Application through Boston Borough Council. They say you can only make a first impression once and EverCrest Property Care Ltd certainly made an excellent impression indeed, in fact the work they undertook was first class and our Building Control Inspector was equally impressed with the standard of works they carried out. Our project involved replacing a main roof on a detached property and likewise on a kitchen extension. Work commenced on a Friday with the scaffolding being erected along with the delivery of two skips. On the Monday morning around 8:30am a team of 7 arrived on site and by 10am both roofs had been stripped and the Building Inspector was called early to check out the structure prior to the roofers installing the new insulation, membrane and battening in readiness for the new soffits, guttering and tiles being installed from Tuesday onwards. By Thursday the project had been completed and the Building Inspector returned first thing Friday morning and signed off the work having been impressed with the finished work. On the basis of the above experience we would have no hesitation in recommending EverCrest Property Care Ltd as a suitable and very experienced roofing contractor and would be happy to give any references to their standard of works.

Dry Ridge & Dry Verge in Sleaford: common questions

What does a dry ridge system cost?

That depends on the length of ridge and hip, the tiles you have and the access, so the honest route is the one we always take: a free look, then a fixed price in writing. You will never be quoted one number and charged another.

What is dry verge, in plain terms?

The verge is the edge of the roof at the gable end. Traditionally those edge tiles are bedded on mortar, which cracks and falls away over the years. Dry verge replaces the mortar with interlocking caps that are fixed on mechanically, so the edge stays put without maintenance.

Is dry fix worth it on an older house?

Often it makes the most sense there, because an older roof has usually been re-bedded before and will need it again. Fitting a dry system swaps a repeating repair for a one-off job. We will look at your ridge and verge for free and tell you plainly whether yours is a good candidate.

Will it change how my roof looks?

The ridge and verge lines look tidier if anything, with neat continuous caps instead of weathered mortar. At the quote visit we can show you photographs of dry-fix work we have completed so you can judge the appearance for yourself before deciding.
