A lance takes moss off quickly and takes the surface with it. On a concrete tile it strips the weatherproofing. On limestone or an old stone slate it is worse still, because you are blasting a soft, porous material that has been weathering gently for two hundred years. We remove moss by hand with scrapers and brushes, and on a period roof we would rather decline the work than damage it.
What shows up underneath
Moss hides cracked and slipped tiles, ridge pointing that has failed, and lead that has lifted. Clearing it doubles as a survey: you get photographs of the roof as it actually is and a plain list of anything wanting attention, with no obligation to have any of it done by us.
Why Stamford roofs collect it
Stone and old clay are more porous than modern concrete tile, so they hold damp longer and moss takes hold more readily. Add the mature trees along the older streets, the shelter of a tight town centre and north-facing slopes that see little sun, and it is unsurprising. There is nothing wrong with those roofs; they want clearing more often than an open modern one.

One of the problems of finding a roofer when you are an older person is the thought of being scammed, especially given the increasing numbers of rogue traders together with the high costs at stake especially if the work is poor or non existent. We trawled a lot of roofers and found varying prices and limited experience and ‘one man bands’ offering little or no guarantees for their work. We came across Fred’s newly formed EverCrest Property Care Ltd Company and were initially concerned at the limited 3 months or so that they had been trading for, albeit that Fred had been a Sole Trader for some 6 years. So we undertook a ‘due diligence’ on the company and found they had worked on a limited number of roofing projects in the start up time. However having had a number of positive conversations with Fred we decided to give his company a chance having had a very good response and price to our required specification that formed the basis of our Building Control Application through Boston Borough Council. They say you can only make a first impression once and EverCrest Property Care Ltd certainly made an excellent impression indeed, in fact the work they undertook was first class and our Building Control Inspector was equally impressed with the standard of works they carried out. Our project involved replacing a main roof on a detached property and likewise on a kitchen extension. Work commenced on a Friday with the scaffolding being erected along with the delivery of two skips. On the Monday morning around 8:30am a team of 7 arrived on site and by 10am both roofs had been stripped and the Building Inspector was called early to check out the structure prior to the roofers installing the new insulation, membrane and battening in readiness for the new soffits, guttering and tiles being installed from Tuesday onwards. By Thursday the project had been completed and the Building Inspector returned first thing Friday morning and signed off the work having been impressed with the finished work. On the basis of the above experience we would have no hesitation in recommending EverCrest Property Care Ltd as a suitable and very experienced roofing contractor and would be happy to give any references to their standard of works.

Can you pressure wash my stone roof?
We will not, and you should be wary of anyone who offers to. Blasting soft, porous stone that has weathered gently for centuries causes damage that cannot be undone. Hand clearing is slower and it is the right way.
Does moss actually cause leaks?
Indirectly and reliably. It holds water against the roof, breaks off and blocks gutters and outlets, and a blocked gutter puts water where it should not be. It also hides a cracked tile very well.
How often should it be done?
Every few years on a shaded or north-facing slope, less on an open sunny one. Older porous roofs generally want it more often. We will tell you what yours looks like it needs.
Do you treat the roof afterwards?
We will talk through the options honestly, including doing nothing. We will not promise a treatment that keeps a shaded roof clear permanently, because none does.
