Fascias, soffits and guttering in Stamford

Guttering is the cheapest thing on a house to put right and among the dearest to leave. On a limestone building it is dearer still, because water running down soft stone for a couple of winters does damage that costs a great deal more than the gutter would have. What goes wrong

Gutters block, sag on tired brackets, or part at a joint and drip in one place until the wall below goes green and starts to break down. The fascia behind rots where the felt was cut short and rain has been landing on bare timber for years. Soffits follow, and once there is a gap birds find it.

Old walls need a careful hand

Fixing new rainwater goods to soft limestone or old lime-mortared brick is not the same job as fixing them to a modern estate house. Fixings go into the fascia and the rafter feet rather than into whatever is nearest, and where something has to go into masonry it goes into a joint rather than through the face of a stone. Carelessness here leaves marks that stay for the life of the building.

Cast iron and what replaces it

Some older Stamford properties still carry cast iron rainwater goods, and on a listed building or in the conservation area you may be expected to keep them or match them.
