Before you ask
Questions people ask
Why is only the wall facing the fields damp?
That wall takes the wind-driven rain. If the fill in its cavity has got wet or slumped, it bridges the gap and carries damp through to the inside, while the sheltered walls stay dry. We look and photograph before pricing anything.
Is our older house in the centre of Crowland likely to have cavity fill?
Less likely. Older brick houses in the middle of town are usually solid-walled, so the fill is rarely the cause there. We can tell you which you have when we look.
Will taking the insulation out make the house colder?
Wet insulation insulates poorly, so a wall with failed fill was giving you damp rather than warmth. Removal gets the cavity clear and dry, and what happens next can be decided with the photographs in front of you.

More about cavity wall insulation removal in Crowland
A cavity wall keeps the weather out by leaving a gap between the outer brick and the inner wall. Fill that gap with insulation and a sheltered wall may cope. A wall that faces open fen and takes wind-driven rain all winter is a different matter: the outer brick gets soaked, the fill can take on water, and damp finds a way across to the inside.
Signs the fill has failed
- Damp patches on the inside of an outside wall, worst on the side facing the weather
- Cold spots and mould that come back after redecorating
- Damp that first appeared after the cavity was filled
- A survey flagging damp readings on a wall with cavity fill
Which Crowland houses it affects
The oldest brick houses around the abbey and Trinity Bridge are generally solid-walled, so cavity fill is mostly a question for the later housing: postwar homes and the newer estates towards the edges of town. Those are the walls that were filled during years of insulation schemes, and on an exposed plot the gable facing the open fields tends to show trouble first.
How it comes out
We drill out and extract the fill until the cavity is clear, so there is nothing left to carry damp across from the outer brick. What we find and what we take out are photographed, and the quote and the finished job are both put in writing. Not every damp wall is down to the fill, so we look at the walls inside and out before pricing anything.
