“They say you can only make a first impression once and EverCrest Property Care Ltd certainly made an excellent impression indeed, in fact the work they undertook was first class and our Building Control Inspector was equally impressed with the standard of works they carried out.”

Before you ask

Questions people ask

Only the side of our chimney facing the fields has lost its mortar. Why?

That is the weather side. Out on the fen, wind-driven rain hits one face of a stack far harder than the others, and frost finishes what the rain starts. Repointing that face may be all it needs, and the photographs will show whether it is.

Should we take down a chimney we no longer use?

Sometimes that is the sensible answer, and sometimes the stack is worth keeping. We photograph it, talk both options through with you and price whichever you choose in writing.

The ceiling next to our chimney is damp. Is it the stack?

Often it is not. Lead that has lifted where the stack meets the roof is the more common cause, particularly after a gale. We check the lead and the brickwork and show you what we find before suggesting anything.

Are you insured to work on chimneys?

Yes. Public liability and employer's liability insurance cover every job we do, chimney work included.

Ready when you are

It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.

More about chimney repairs & rebuilds in Crowland

On a flat fen skyline the chimney is the tallest part of most Crowland houses, and it meets every gale that crosses the open land around the town before anything else does. Wind, rain and frost work on the top of the stack first: the flaunching around the pots, the mortar joints on the weather side, and the lead where the stack meets the roof.

Signs a stack needs attention

  • Mortar missing from the joints on the face that looks out over the fields
  • Cracked or crumbling flaunching around the pots
  • A pot or the whole stack starting to lean
  • Damp on a chimney breast, or on the ceiling beside it, after heavy rain
  • Lead that has lifted or pulled away from the brickwork
  • Pieces of brick or mortar turning up on the path

Repoint, rebuild or renew the lead

Where the bricks are sound and only the joints have weathered, repointing is the answer. Where the stack has moved or the brick faces are breaking up, it needs taking down and building back properly. We have done both: one customer had a chimney taken down and rebuilt, and another had theirs repaired with new lead fitted around it. Quite often the brickwork is fine and the leak is the lead, and then the lead is what we renew, dressed in properly rather than smeared with sealant.

Older stacks near the abbey

The older brick houses around the abbey and the market place carry some stacks that have stood a very long time, often on clay pantile roofs. Work on those is careful work. Brick and mortar are matched to what is already there, and the pantiles around the base are made good so the repair does not stand out from the street.

Seen before it is priced

A chimney is hard to judge from the ground, so we go up, photograph it close, and go through the pictures with you in plain words. The quote is free and in writing, and the price quoted is the price paid. Chimney work is guaranteed for five or ten years depending on the job, with public liability and employer's liability insurance in place. Ring 01733 855167.
