Before you ask
Questions people ask
Our Bourne house has been damp since the cavity was filled. Is that connected?
It can be. Fill that has got wet or slumped can bridge the cavity and carry damp through to the inside. We look and photograph before saying either way.
Does the fill have to come out of the whole house?
Not always. It depends where the problem is and what we find. We explain what we see and quote in writing for what the walls actually need.
We are selling and the survey found damp. Can you help?
Yes. We can look at the walls, photograph what we find and give you a written price, so you and your buyer are working from the same facts.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about cavity wall insulation removal in Bourne
Many of the brick houses around Bourne had their cavities filled under insulation schemes over the years, from postwar semis to homes on the estates at the edge of town. Most of that fill sits quietly and does its job. Some of it does not, and when it fails it brings damp indoors in a way that is easy to blame on something else.
Signs the fill may be the cause
- Damp patches on outside walls that come back after redecorating
- Cold spots and mould in corners and behind furniture
- Damp that is worst on the side of the house that takes the weather
- A survey on a sale picking up damp readings nobody can explain
Why it happens
A cavity wall is built with a gap so that rain soaking into the outer brick never reaches the inner wall. Fill that was badly installed, or has taken on water over time, can slump and bridge that gap, and moisture then tracks straight across. Houses facing the open fen to the east of town take the most wind-driven rain, which is what soaks the outer skin in the first place.
Drilled out, photographed, in writing
Before anything is done, we look at the walls inside and out and explain plainly whether the fill is likely to be the cause, because not every damp wall is a cavity problem. The older stone and solid brick houses near the town centre will not have cavity fill at all, and we will tell you so. Where the fill is the problem, we drill it out and extract it until the cavity is clear, photographing what we find along the way. Ring 01778 775043 for a free look. The quote is in writing, the price quoted is the price paid, and the work is guaranteed for five or ten years depending on the job.
