Roof cleaning and moss removal in Newark

Moss cleared by hand and the gutters done with it, without stripping the surface off your tiles.

  • Newark, Nottinghamshire

Moss on a roof is not only a look. It holds water against the tiles, breaks off in lumps that block gutters and outlets, and in a hard frost the water it holds expands within the tile surface. We clear moss from roofs across Newark-on-Trent and clear the gutters at the same time.

By hand, not with a lance

A pressure washer takes moss off fast and takes the sealed surface of the tiles with it. On a concrete tile that surface is the weatherproofing, so blasting it converts a slow problem into a quick one. We remove moss by hand with scrapers and brushes, working down the roof. We will decline to jet-wash a roof that should not be jet-washed, even when we are asked to.

What appears once it is gone

Moss hides a great deal: cracked and slipped tiles, ridge pointing that has failed, lead that has lifted. Clearing it doubles as a survey. You get photographs of the roof as it really is and a plain list of anything wanting attention, with no obligation to have any of it done by us.

The river and the trees

Newark sits on the Trent, and river valleys hold damp air that lingers. Add the mature trees on the older streets shading north-facing slopes and you have ideal conditions for moss. There is nothing wrong with those roofs. They simply want clearing more often than an open, sunny, steep one does.

What the job includes

Gutters, downpipes and outlets cleared as part of the work and checked that they actually run, because there is little sense clearing a roof and leaving the moss sitting in the gutter. The work is insured, and anything we find that needs a roofer rather than a brush you will hear about plainly and see photographed.

What people say

In their words, not ours

One of the problems of finding a roofer when you are an older person is the thought of being scammed, especially given the increasing numbers of rogue traders together with the high costs at stake especially if the work is poor or non existent. We trawled a lot of roofers and found varying prices and limited experience and ‘one man bands’ offering little or no guarantees for their work. We came across Fred’s newly formed EverCrest Property Care Ltd Company and were initially concerned at the limited 3 months or so that they had been trading for, albeit that Fred had been a Sole Trader for some 6 years. So we undertook a ‘due diligence’ on the company and found they had worked on a limited number of roofing projects in the start up time. However having had a number of positive conversations with Fred we decided to give his company a chance having had a very good response and price to our required specification that formed the basis of our Building Control Application through Boston Borough Council. They say you can only make a first impression once and EverCrest Property Care Ltd certainly made an excellent impression indeed, in fact the work they undertook was first class and our Building Control Inspector was equally impressed with the standard of works they carried out. Our project involved replacing a main roof on a detached property and likewise on a kitchen extension. Work commenced on a Friday with the scaffolding being erected along with the delivery of two skips. On the Monday morning around 8:30am a team of 7 arrived on site and by 10am both roofs had been stripped and the Building Inspector was called early to check out the structure prior to the roofers installing the new insulation, membrane and battening in readiness for the new soffits, guttering and tiles being installed from Tuesday onwards. By Thursday the project had been completed and the Building Inspector returned first thing Friday morning and signed off the work having been impressed with the finished work. On the basis of the above experience we would have no hesitation in recommending EverCrest Property Care Ltd as a suitable and very experienced roofing contractor and would be happy to give any references to their standard of works.

Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal in Newark: common questions

Will pressure washing damage the roof?

On concrete tiles it can, seriously, because the sealed surface is what keeps water out and a lance strips it. That is why we work by hand, and why we would rather turn the job down than harm a sound roof.

Does moss cause leaks?

Indirectly and reliably. It holds water against the tiles, breaks off and blocks gutters and outlets, and a blocked gutter puts water where it should not be. It also hides a cracked tile very well.

How often should it be done?

Every few years for a shaded or north-facing slope, less for an open sunny one. We will tell you what your roof looks like it needs rather than sell you a maintenance plan.

Do you treat it to stop it coming back?

We will talk through the options honestly, including doing nothing. What we will not do is promise a treatment that keeps a shaded roof clear for good, because none does.
