Three jobs, not one

Repointing suits a stack with sound brickwork and washed-out joints. Releading suits a stack that is fine in itself but whose flashing has cracked, lifted or was never dressed in properly. A rebuild is for a stack that has moved, or whose bricks are spalling, and means taking it down to a sound course and building it back up. Working out which of the three you actually need, and showing you why in photographs, is most of the value of the visit.

Lead, fitted as a full set

A chimney is flashed with parts that each have a job: soakers between the tiles, step flashing up the sides, an apron at the front, a back gutter behind. Leave one out, or run mastic where lead belongs, and water comes in. We fit the whole set in lead, dressed to the tile profile actually on your roof. On one re-roof we re-leaded a stack from scratch that way while dismantling a second, redundant one.

Shared stacks on the older streets

Newark has terraces where one stack serves two houses, and that changes things. Working on half a chimney is rarely sensible, so it is worth talking to the neighbour before anything starts.
