Flat roofing in Newark

Why old felt gives up
Built-up felt goes brittle with age and ultraviolet, then splits exactly where it is asked to move: at upstands, at corners, and along the joint where the flat roof meets the wall. Ponding water finds those splits. By the time a ceiling shows anything the deck has usually been damp for a while, which is why we lift a corner and look rather than price it from the ground.
EPDM rubber and torch-on felt
EPDM goes down as a single sheet across the field of the roof, so on a normal domestic extension there is no seam in the middle to fail, and it stays flexible in cold weather instead of hardening. Torch-on is a layered system bonded down with a gas torch and finished with a mineral surfaced cap sheet, and it suits a roof cut about with upstands and awkward details. We fit both and will tell you which suits your roof rather than which suits our diary.
Flat roofs behind parapets
Newark has plenty of buildings whose flat roofs sit behind a parapet wall, and those need particular care. The covering has to be dressed up the parapet properly and the outlet has to be genuinely clear, because a parapet roof with a blocked outlet has nowhere at all to shed water. It becomes a tank, and the first sign is often inside the building.

Can my flat roof be patched instead of replaced?
Sometimes, and we will say so when it is true. Where the felt has gone brittle across the whole roof a patch only moves the next split along, and we would rather tell you that than do the job twice.
EPDM or torch-on, which should I have?
EPDM suits a simple rectangular extension because it goes on in one piece. Torch-on suits a roof with lots of upstands and details. The shape of the roof decides it, not a preference of ours.
My flat roof is behind a parapet and keeps flooding. Why?
Almost always the outlet. A parapet roof can only drain one way, so a blocked or undersized outlet turns it into a tank. We check the outlet and the fall, not just the covering.
Do you do garage and outbuilding roofs?
