Dry ridge and dry verge systems in Oakham

Ridge and verge tiles fixed down mechanically, which on open Rutland ground is worth doing.

  • Oakham, Rutland

If your ridge tiles have already been rebedded once, the next quote to rebed them restarts the same clock. A dry system fixes ridge and verge tiles down mechanically and takes mortar out of the equation. We fit them across Oakham and the Rutland villages.

Why mortar keeps failing here

Mortar is rigid and a roof is not. Tiles expand and contract, the timber beneath moves, and the bed cracks because it cannot follow. Water gets into the crack, frost expands it, and pieces let go. Rutland is high, open ground with long exposed sight lines and very little shelter, so the wind then finds anything loose faster than it would in a sheltered valley. Rebedding puts the roof back exactly as it was before it failed.

What gets fitted

A ridge kit runs a ventilated roll along the apex with each ridge tile screwed to a batten through a clamp. A dry verge is a set of interlocking caps down the gable edge, again mechanically fixed. Both are ventilated, which matters more than people expect: a roof needs air moving through it, and a solid mortar bed is very effective at stopping that.

The gable is the weak point

On an exposed gable the verge is the first thing wind gets under. Once one verge tile lifts, the wind has an edge to work at and the rest go along the run. Removing that edge entirely is the single most useful thing you can do to an exposed roof, and it is why we would usually recommend doing the verges as well as the ridge here rather than just the ridge.

Where it does not suit

On a period stone property, or a listed building, a dry verge can look wrong and may not be appropriate. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your house falls, and if the right answer is traditional mortar carefully done, that is what we will say. Before you ring

Dry Ridge & Dry Verge in Oakham: common questions

Is dry ridge better than rebedding in mortar?

For longevity yes, and on exposed ground the gap is wider. Rebedding restores the thing that failed; a mechanically fixed ridge has nothing in it to crack or wash out.

Should I do the verges as well as the ridge?

On an exposed Rutland gable, usually yes. The verge is where wind gets its first grip, and doing the ridge alone leaves the edge that fails first untouched.

Will it look wrong on a stone cottage?

It can, and in some settings it will not be appropriate at all. We will tell you honestly rather than fit it because it is quicker, and on the right building we will recommend traditional mortar instead.

Can it be done without a full re-roof?

Yes, and often it should be. If the covering has years left there is no sense replacing it just to sort the ridge.
