Do retaining walls need planning permission?

Walls over 1m adjacent to a highway, or over 2m elsewhere, typically need planning permission. We advise on requirements for your specific project.

What's behind the retaining wall?

Drainage. Every retaining wall needs drainage behind it to relieve water pressure. Without drainage, water pressure can be higher than earth pressure and cause failure.

How high can a retaining wall be?

Depends on design and materials. Simple gravity walls work up to about 1.2m. Taller walls need reinforcement or engineering. We design for any height required.
