Retaining Walls
Engineered retaining walls for slopes, terraces, and boundary structures.
Retaining walls hold back earth. They're structural elements that must resist the lateral pressure of soil, water, and any loads above. An inadequately designed retaining wall will lean, crack, and eventually fail — potentially causing significant damage.
We engineer retaining walls for the specific conditions of your site. Soil type, wall height, drainage behind the wall, and surcharge loads all affect the design. We calculate what's needed and build accordingly.
Options include concrete block, brick, natural stone, and timber sleepers. Each has different structural capabilities and aesthetics. We recommend the best option based on your requirements and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do retaining walls need planning permission?
Walls over 1m adjacent to a highway, or over 2m elsewhere, typically need planning permission. We advise on requirements for your specific project.
What's behind the retaining wall?
Drainage. Every retaining wall needs drainage behind it to relieve water pressure. Without drainage, water pressure can be higher than earth pressure and cause failure.
How high can a retaining wall be?
Depends on design and materials. Simple gravity walls work up to about 1.2m. Taller walls need reinforcement or engineering. We design for any height required.
